A man was struck and killed by a freight train in north suburban Grayslake Monday morning, causing Metra to provide bus shuttles for its passengers on its North Central Service line.

The man, believed to be in his 20’s, was walking south on the tracks at Lake Street Crossing near Hillside Avenue when witnesses saw him step in to the path of a freight train headed north, Grayslake police said in a statement.

The incident appears to be a suicide, a spokesman for the Lake County Coroner’s office said. Officials had not yet identified him at 11:15 a.m., the spokesman said.

Grayslake police are investigating the incident with the Lake County Major Crash Assistance Team, the statement said.

Metra North Central Service train No. 101, scheduled to arrive Antioch at 8:48 a.m., approached the scene about 8:30 a.m. and was later canceled, according to Metra. Passengers were bussed from the train to all remaining stops before Antioch, according to Metra.

All other inbound and outbound trains will not move through Grayslake, according to Metra. Passengers are being bussed between the Prairie Crossing and Antioch stops, according to Metra.

Delays on the line can be up to 70 minutes, Metra said.
