Woman killed in McCordsville train-car collision.
An Indianapolis woman is dead after a train hit a car Tuesday night at a McCordsville railroad crossing.
The crash occurred after 9:30 p.m. when a northeast bound train struck a car that had been headed northbound on Hancock County Road 700 West, said Assistant Chief Paul Casey of the McCordsville Police Department.
The car contained only the driver, later identified as Evelyn Wasson, Casey said. Police do not know whether the car was moving or stopped atop the tracks at the time it was hit, Casey said.
The crossing is marked by signs, a light and an arm, authorities said. It is unknown whether she drove around the arm.
The Hancock County coroner will perform an autopsy today on the victim, police said, whom police were not identifying as of 8:30 a.m. today pending notification of family members. Casey described the victim as an older woman from Indianapolis.
