A man was taken to the Shelby County Jail Monday morning after police say he crashed his car into a school bus and was intoxicated. Police say around 7:41 a.m., a vehicle driven by Jeffrey Ward was heading westbound on Polk approaching Tompkins. The Shelbyville Central School bus, which was carrying seven children and the bus driver, was heading southbound on Tompkins at Polk Street when the driver saw Ward approaching and noticed he wasn’t slowing down. According to a release, the bus driver tried to alert Ward by honking her horn, but Ward didn’t slow down or stop for the stop sign. Ward ran the stop sign and crashed into the rear tire of the school bus. Officers arrived and checked the children and drivers for injuries, but no one was hurt. The bus had minor damage and Ward’s vehicle was heavily damaged. Officers at the crash scene said Ward appeared to be intoxicated. After investigating, it was determined he was. Police say Ward had taken prescription pills and smoked marijuana before the crash.
