A motorcyclist from Pennsylvania died in a freak accident on Interstate 80 near Atlantic in western Iowa.

The Iowa State Patrol says 39-year-old Andrew Joseph Engle, of Pittsburgh, died at the hospital in Atlantic, after the left rear tire of a westbound trailer being pulled by a Ford F-350 pickup driven by 40-year old Scott Edward Farmer, of Cheyenne, Wyoming, flew off the trailer and bounced into the eastbound lane of I-80, striking Engle in the upper body and head area.

The Council Bluffs Nonpareil reports that a wheel from a trailer being pulled by a westbound pickup came loose, bounced into the eastbound lanes of the interstate and hit the 39-year-old motorcyclist on Thursday afternoon. Authorities say the wheel hit Andrew Engle, of Pittsburgh. Engle was taken to a local hospital, where he died.

I witnessed this crash and yes, it was a freak accident. Andrew was riding with 2 other motorcyclists. One tried to warn his friends, wildly waving his arms. Andrew may have been able to avoid it had he had another second or two to process what was going on. We felt helpless as we watched the tire bounce above a semi and fly into traffic. It hit Andrew and he went out of control and landed on a bridge. We thought he would be alright but later found out her died from his injuries. So sad!

I am interested if you have any info about why the wheel may have separated from the trailer. What about the road debris or vehicle operation?
