Fort Riley soldier killed in head-on crash

The driver of the Ford pickup truck was identified as Thomas J. Packer, 26, of Tama, Iowa. A near head-on fatality crash that occurred early Thursday in Geary County claimed the life of a Fort Riley soldier and shut down a highway for more than nine hours, authorities said. The collision, which involved a semi-trailer and pickup truck, occurred around 3:35 a.m. on US-77 highway, just south of its junction with K-82 highway. Packer, a U.S. Army soldier stationed at Fort Riley, wasn'€™t wearing a seat belt, the patrol said. Both vehicles came to rest in the east ditch of US-77 highway.

Former Tama soldier killed in Kansas crash

TAMA, Iowa — Funeral services are scheduled Sunday for a former Tama man killed in a crash last week in north-central Kansas. Patrick Catholic Church, 900 Park Street, in Tama, according to an online obituary. He graduated from South Tama High School and attended Marshalltown Community College. A crash report from the Kansas Highway Patrol said Packer, of Wakefield, Kan., left the roadway and entered the ditch. An aerial picture of the crash scene posted on Twitter by Trooper Ben Gardner appeared to show both vehicles caught fire after the crash.
