Troopers with the Louisiana State Police arrested Charles Moter, 58, on charges stemming from a vehicle crash that left three people dead Saturday afternoon. The crash happened on Louisiana Highway 343, south of U.S. Highway 90. Authorities said Moter was trying to pass a northbound vehicle when he came within a hazardous proximity to a vehicle driven by Nathaniel Malone, 31, of Duson. Malone steered left to avoid a crash, authorities said, but the front of Moter’s vehicle struck the right side of Malone’s vehicle. Malone suffered moderate injuries and was transported to a local hospital. The passengers in his vehicle -- 33-year-old Joe Wise, 14-year-old Cassie Kilby and 16-year-old Kaylin Flyte -- died in the crash. Authorities said Flyte was pregnant at the time of the crash. All three passengers and the fetus were pronounced dead at the scene. Moter and his passenger, 23-year-old Harrison Moore, suffered minor injuries and were transported to local hospitals. Authorities believe Moter was impaired by alcohol and he was placed under arrest. He is charged with three counts of vehicular homicide, third-degree feticide, negligent injuring, driving left of center and reckless operation.
