One person, identified as 24-year-old Jerrel Hancock, died in the explosion while cleaning a key piece of oilfield equipment known as a heater treater. All other employees have been accounted for.

The maintenance accident occurred just before 3 p.m. at West Delta 105 on the "E" platform in the Gulf of Mexico, which is about 12 miles off the coast of Louisiana. Employees of Turnkey Cleaning services were cleaning a heater when an explosion occurred, and 1 person was killed. A second person was flown to West Jefferson Hospital with injuries, and two others had ringing in their ears. All three injured were treated and released. The operator of the natural gas platform, Fieldwood Energy LLC, said that the platform was not in production at the time of the explosion, and the Bureau of Safety and Environmental Enforcement reported no pollution.
