A man was killed after being ejected from a vehicle in a crash on I-95 in the Abingdon area early Monday morning, officials from the Maryland State Police said.

A 2004 Mitsubishi Eclipse was found in the grassy area near the pullover lane on I-95 North around 1:40 a.m. Monday, police said.

The driver, identified as Dereck Wayne Hobbs, 24, was pronounced dead on the scene, after being thrown from the vehicle during the crash, police said.

Based on an initial investigation, police said Hobbs was driving in the third lane and veered off the road for an "unknown reason."

The car hit a shrub and a small tree, continued uphill and then collided with a larger tree, throwing the driver from the vehicle, Beads said. He said the driver was not wearing a seat belt.

"All I know is if the guy was wearing a seatbelt, he would still be alive," police said.

Police said it's he didn't know where the man lived.

No other vehicles were involved in the accident, police said. Hobbs was the sole occupant of the vehicle.
