A Baltimore woman died from injuries sustained in a chain-reaction accident along Route 1 in Jessup Wednesday morning.
A Baltimore woman died from injuries sustained in a chain-reaction accident along Route 1 in Jessup Wednesday morning. According to Howard County Police, Rafaella Bonita Griffin, 39, of Cooks Lane in Baltimore, died Wednesday night after being taken to the University of Maryland Shock Trauma Center earlier in the day. Griffin's vehicle, a 2000 Volkswagen Jetta, was stopped at a traffic light on northbound Route 1, preparing to turn left into the Route 1 Shopping Center south of Kit Kat Road in Jessup, according to police. Police said Griffin's vehicle was rear-ended by a 2010 Freightliner box truck driven by William Franklin Russell III, 56, of Merrymaker Way in Elkridge. According to police, the Volkswagen was pushed into the rear of a 2006 Chrysler 300, which was stopped in front of it. Neither Russell nor the driver of the Chrysler -– Michael Jerome Thompson, 40, of Clinton -- were injured, police said. Police do not think Wednesday's ice storm was a significant factor in the crash. According to police, both Griffin and Thompson were attempting to turn left into the shopping center from the through lane along Route 1 and not the designated left-turn lane. Route 1 was closed for several hours Wednesday morning for cleanup and investigation, eventually reopening about 9:15 a.m. The incident is being investigated by the Howard Count Traffic Enforcement Section.
