Kyle Norwood Philhower, 23, David Lippold, Jr., 24, critically injured, transported to hospital, after their SUV, traveling at high speed, leaves the roadway near Catherine Avenue and Harlem Avenues in Pasadena, and crashes into a tree.

Police in Anne Arundel County say two men in their early 20s were critically injured in a single car crash early Friday morning in Pasadena, Md.

Officers were called to the area of Catherine Avenue and Harlem Avenue at approximately 1:56 a.m. for the report of a vehicle crashing into a tree.

Preliminary investigation revealed that the Porsche Cayenne was traveling east on Catherine Avenue at a high rate of speed which was estimated in excess of 70 mph, police say. As the vehicle approached a curve on the roadway at Harlem Avenue, it continued to travel straight. The vehicle then struck and drove over the curb on the right side of the road, partially tearing the right front wheel off in the process.

The vehicle continued to travel in a straight path, crossing two front yards and a driveway before striking a large tree with the right front corner of the vehicle, police say. The impact of the collision caused the engine to eject from the engine compartment of the vehicle.

The driver and passenger in the vehicle both suffered extensive injuries and had to be cut from the vehicle by rescue personnel.

The driver is identified as 24-year-old David Lippold, Jr., of the 600 block of Backridge Court in Fredericksburg, Va. The passenger is 23-year-old Kyle Norwood Philhower, oif the 1200 block of Gillia Court in Pasadena.

Police say excessive speed and alcohol are both considered contributing factors in this collision.
