Pedestrian Struck, Killed On Route 1 In Saugus Identified As Cambridge Man.
State police say a man walking along U.S. Route 1 in Saugus was struck and killed by a vehicle.
Police say 55-year-old David Gartland of Cambridge was struck on the northbound side of the highway at about 8:40 p.m. Thursday.
Responding troopers and Saugus police officers found Gartland unresponsive in the roadway in the area of the Ferns Motel.
He was taken to North Shore Medical Center in Lynn where he was pronounced dead.
Preliminary investigation suggests Gartland was struck as he was walking in the center lane by a SUV operated by a 30-year-old Malden man.
The SUV that struck Gartland stopped at the scene and no charges have been filed.
State Police said a second man who may have been walking with Gartland when he was struck was located about 35 minutes after the crash further south on Route 1, near the Home Depot.
That man, a 45-year-old Palmer resident, was not injured but was transported to the hospital at his request to be with Gartland.
The facts and circumstances of the crash, including why the victim was walking in the highway, remain under investigation.
