A trial date of Aug. 29 has been set for the woman charged in the crash that seriously injured pedestrian Paul Bachini in Agawam more than two years ago.
An Agawam driver was arrested and charged with drunken driving following a Thursday afternoon accident on South West Street in which a pedestrian was struck while walking along the side of the road, police said.
The driver, Cathy Sabol of 668 South West St., was charged with operating under the influence of alcohol and causing serious bodily injury, marked lanes violation, leaving the scene of a personal injury accident, leaving the scene of a property damage accident, negligent operation of a motor vehicle, and speeding.
According to Agawam Police Sgt. Jennifer Blanchette, police received multiple 911 calls at about 12:15 regarding a pedestrian accident near 491 South West St. in the Feeding Hills section of Agawam.
The first officers on scene found a man, later identified as Paul Bachini, 61, lying in the road suffering from serious injuries. The man, whose name was not disclosed by police, was stuck while walking with his wife north along South West Street. She was uninjured, she said.
The man was treated at the scene by Agawam Fire Department ambulance and then taken to Baystate Medical Center in Springfield. Blanchette said his condition is unknown.
Sabol’s car, a gray 2012 Nissan Altima was found about a half-mile down the road from the accident scene, she said.
Footage of the car shows that it had heavy damage to the right front end and windshield.
The road was closed for a time while police investigated the scene.
Blanchette said the preliminary investigation shows that after striking the man, Sabol drove into several other objects along the side of the road but continued down the road for a half mile.
The accident investigation is continuing by the Agawam Police Department Traffic Bureau with assistance from the Massachusetts State Police Collision Analysis Reconstruction Team and Crime Scene Services.
