A man suspected of driving while drunk crossed into on-coming and crashed into a truck, killing his 3-year-old daughter and the other driver, the Northwestern District Attorney’s Office said Sunday. The crash occured about 3:30 p.m. Saturday on Hendrick Street in Easthampton, authorities said. Mauricio Velasquez, 32, of Springfield, charged with motor vehicle homicide, operating under the influence alcohol, and child endangerment, among other charges. He was being held Sunday on $50,000 bail and is scheduled to be arraigned Monday in Northampton. According to a statement by the district attorney’s office, Velasquez had two passengers in his vehicle, including his 3-year-old daughter, when he crossed the dividing line and struck a truck driven by Charles Hoffman, 71, of Easthampton. Hoffman had a female passenger in his truck at the time, authorities said. Both drivers and all of their passengers were taken to Baystate Medical Center in Springfield, where Hoffman and the young girl later died, according to the statement. The adult male passenger in Velasquez’s car and the female in Hoffman’s truck both sustained serious injuries, the statement said.
