Deerfield driver charged with drunk driving after Greenfield accident; pregnant woman injured, hospitalized.
Police Monday night charged a 54-year-old Deerfield man with driving while intoxicated – his fourth offense – following an accident Monday night on Route 2A at River Street that left a pregnant woman with a fractured arm and other injuries, police said.
The driver, Michael Thorpe of 784 River Road, Deerfield, was charged with operating a motor vehicle while under the influence of alcohol, fourth offense, and failure to use care in turning.
Police said he appeared unsteady on his feet, was slurring his speech and had a strong odor of alcohol on his breath.
A review of his records showed he had been arrested for drunken driving three times previously, police said.
According to police, Thorpe drove through a red light, made a left turn and then crashed broadside into a Volkswagen sedan drive by Lisa Yin, 29, of Keene, N.H. The accident was reported just before 9:30 p.m.
Yin suffered a broken arm and a back injury. There was also a concern because Yin is six months pregnant, police said.
She was taken by ambulance to Baystate Medical Center in Springfield. According to a hospital spokesman, she was listed in good condition Tuesday afternoon.
Thorpe suffered minor injuries in the crash. He declined treatment at the scene.
He was taken into custody on an outstanding warrant for violating terms of his probation from another court case. He was arraigned Tuesday morning in Greenfield District Court.
He was ordered held without the right to bail at Franklin County House of Correction pending a hearing regarding his probation violation that was scheduled for April 14.
Before he can be released from custody, Thorpe agreed to submit to random screening for drugs or alcohol, to not operate any motor vehicle and to not go into any establishments that sell alcohol, according to the Northwestern District Attorney's Office.
