One of two people injured in a Sunday night car crash was in critical condition Monday morning at Baystate Medical Center, said Springfield police Officer Robert Kalin, the department's lead traffic-fatality investigator.

The Chevrolet sedan in which the pair was traveling sideswiped another vehicle before striking a home at 487 Bay St. at about 10:30 p.m., police said.

The Chevy's driver and passenger were both injured. However, the passenger, who was ejected from the car, is in "worse shape," said Kalin, a member of the Police Department's accident reconstruction team.

The people in the vehicle that was sideswiped were uninjured.

Police said the Chevy was southbound on Bay Street near Edgewood Street when it made contact with the oncoming car. The Chevy then crossed the northbound lane and plowed through a chain-link fence before hitting the house at the corner of Bay and Sycamore streets.

The car came to rest on its side against the house, whose occupants were uninjured. The home itself appeared to sustain minimal damage.

The driver was trapped inside the wreckage and had to be freed by Springfield firefighters. An update on his condition was not immediately available.
