3-year-old boy killed when family SUV hits tree on Detroit's west side

"He struck a tree. We're not sure if he fell asleep or if there was another accident -- someone may have touched him. We're getting conflicting stories on that," said Assistant Police Chief Steve Dolunt. "We know the airbags deployed. The youngest child who is 3 -- the little boy -- was in a car seat. He was (dead) at the scene. Apparently he wasn't strapped in properly."
A 3-year-old boy died Tuesday morning in when an sport utility vehicle hit a tree on on Fenmore Street at Florence Street on Detroit's west side. Two other children and their 34-year-old father are hospitalized with injuries. Authorities believe the 3-year-old boy was not properly restrained in his car seat. Police say the vehicle was traveling at high speed.
