Forest Hills freshman dies after being hit by car, trying to reach bus

"It is with deep sadness that I communicate to you that Lucas Vansprange, 9th grader at Central High School has passed away. Lucas was struck by a vehicle on Cascade Road this morning around 7:00 am," Forest Hills administrators said in a release sent to parents on Jan. 16.
Forest Hills Central freshman Lucas Vansprange, 15, died Friday morning from injuries sustained being struck by a car while running across a busy road to catch a bus near the Watermark Country Club in the 5000 block of Cascade Road SE, near Spaulding Avenue. The teenager's father was driving a car eastbound on Cascade at around 7:15 a.m. when he pulled into the left-turn lane and stopped to let his son out so that he could walk to a nearby bus stop. The high school freshman then attempted to cross two lanes of traffic when he was struck by a westbound Audi driven by James McCarty, 66. Vansprange was taken to Helen DeVos Children's Hospital, where he later died. Authorities are trying to determine if the school bus had its lights flashing at the time.
