Van Buren Co. man survives car-train crash

"My car's, my car, I can always get another car but I can't get another me," he said.
A man in Van Buren County, Michigan has survived a train-car accident that occured in Bangor at M-43 and West Monroe at approximately 1:30 PM. John Serdel noticed his bank card was lying on the passenger street, so he looked away from the roadway to pick it up and put it back in his wallet. He happened to be crossing one of the few railway intersections without crossing arms, however the flashing lights and signal bells were on. Serdel only noticed the train while he was in the intersection, so he quickly accelerated his car. It was too late, however, and his car was struck in the trunk. The train was only travelling at 20 MPH through the town, outside of the town trains travel near 60 MPH. Serdel was uninjured, however he was fined for his inattentive driving.
