Police believe car driven by 76-year-old crossed fog line, killed two bicyclists

The driver, a 76-year-old man, was heading east on Wamplers Lake Road, M-124, about 4:45 p.m. near Pink Street, east of Brooklyn, when the 2002 Mercury Sable hit the two bicyclists, both women from the Norvell Township area, according to a statement from Jackson County Sheriff Steve Rand's office.

A neighbor had seen Patternson and Massengill minutes before the crash in helmets and yellow. It appears, from all accounts, the exercise partners were acting exactly as they should, being extra cautious. They did "everything right," one family member said.

The man, who lives in the Brooklyn area, is scheduled to be arraigned Tuesday, April 4, in Jackson County District Court. He is accused of committing a moving violation causing death, Jackson County Prosecutor Jerry Jarzynka said.
