Fatal crash under investigation

Zachary Hauser, 17, was driving an Oldsmobile Cutlass east on 68 when he crossed onto Highway 169 in front of a southbound Ford Fusion driven by Gene Groen, 71, of Madison Lake. There is a stop sign on Highway 68.

One Killed in Accident in South Bend Township

State Patrol says the driver of one of the cars in an accident in South Bend Township Thursday afternoon was killed. Crews were called to Highway 169 and Highway 68 in South Bend Township just after 4:00 Thursday. The driver and passenger in the other car, Gene Groen, 71, and Pauline Groen, 63, both of Madison Lake, suffered non-life threatening injuries.

The highway was shut down and traffic was backed up for several miles in both directions as the State Patrol and Blue Earth County Sheriff’s Department responded to the crash scene. MnDOT crews were brought out to divert traffic because of a blind curve that led to the accident scene at the intersection of Highway 169 at Highway 68.
