Two Mounds View High School students on way to school die in morning crash

Two Mounds View High School students have died and one remains in the hospital after their car was struck Thursday morning.

  The crash happened near the frontage road that leads to the high school. Principal Jeffery Ridlehoover said in a statement the students' vehicle was struck at the corner of Highway 10 and County Road 96. The names of the students have not been released.

A statement from Superintendent Chris Lennox said "Counselors and support staff will be available for anyone in our community who wishes to gather at Mounds View High School from 6 – 7:30 p.m. in the Commons."

‘So many heartbroken’ over Mounds View High students’ deaths

A day after their deaths, students and educators who knew the two were left with feelings of sadness and loss.

School officials identified the students — Bridget Giere, 16, and Stephanie Carlson, 16 — on Friday.

A third student who was in the car at the time of the crash — Samantha “Sammy” Redden, 17 — remained hospitalized, though in stable condition, according to school officials.

The three friends were driving to school at the time of the crash. About 7 a.m., they turned left from westbound Highway 96 onto Old Highway 10 and were struck by a vehicle traveling east on 96.

32-year-old Rachel Kayl is charged with two counts of criminal vehicular homicide. Mounds View High School students Stephanie Carlson and Bridget Giere were on their way to school that day, but died when Kayl struck the girls' SUV.   

Driver pleads guilty to killing two Mounds View High School students, injuring third

Rachel Kayl, 33, pleaded guilty in Ramsey County District Court to two counts of criminal vehicular homicide while driving in a "grossly negligent manner" and one count of criminal vehicular operation causing great bodily harm in the Dec. 1, 2016 crash.
