Minneapolis police confirmed late Monday night that two people at a bus stop near the intersection of 45th and Lyndale Avenue North were struck by an SUV that accelerated rapidly in reverse and crashed its way out of the McDonald's parking lot.
According to police, a woman who was in the bus stop with her boyfriend was killed in the crash, which occurred shortly after 5 p.m. The man suffered non-life threatening injuries in the crash and was taken to the hospital for treatment. Neither victim's identity has been released.
Police say they still do not know why the vehicle accelerated so quickly, but they said neither drugs nor alcohol appeared to be factors in the fatal crash. The woman who was driving and a man were inside the SUV when it quickly reversed, hit another car in the parking lot, careened off a tree, ricocheted off a cement garbage can and hit the bus shelter.
