Garvin Barnes, 39, killed after he is struck by a car while directing traffic at a road construction site on Highway 51 near Crystal Springs, Mississippi

A pedestrian is dead after a two car accident on Highway 51 near Crystal Springs. "I was waiting for the flag man to release me so I can pass and a truck came over a hill and hit me from the back and pushed me in the ditch. My car ran over the flag man," says the driver of the Chevrolet Caprice that hit 39-year-old Garvin Barnes. The driver doesn't want his name released. Barnes was directing traffic while workers were paving Highway 51. He works for Dickerson and Barnes Asphalt Paving Company. Copiah County Sheriff Harold Jones says the driver of the Ford Escape hit the Caprice from behind pushing the car into a ditch. There was a four-year-old also in the Escape. The Ford Escape driver and the toddler had minor injuries. "I was trying to get out I was thinking that it would probably blow up or something," says the driver of the Caprice. He was later taken to UMC for back injuries. The Mississippi Highway Patrol started accident reconstruction this Tuesday afternoon as they continue to investigate the crash. Trooper Julius Hutson says that no charges are expected to be filed on the driver of the Ford Escape. The Mississippi Department of Transportation officials also investigated the scene for any work zone safety violations, however, they found nothing wrong. The manager of Dickerson and Brown wouldn't comment on the accident but says that OSHA has been contacted.
