The Mississippi Highway Patrol says it appears that a northbound vehicle somehow got into the southbound lanes of the divided highway.
Fatal crash kills four in Desoto County
According to officials, the southbound lanes of U.S. 61 were closed following the accident so investigators could learn more about what caused the fatal wreck.

Coroner Jeff Pounders confirmed four deaths. The Commercial Appeal reports that officials also said two people suffered critical injuries.
Four killed and two injured after fiery crash in Desoto County
Anthony Thomas says he drove past the scene while on his way home from dinner at a local restaurant. He couldn't believe what he saw. “There was a truck already on fire and it was off in the ditch," said Thomas.

The coroner in DeSoto County has confirmed four people have died after a head-on crash on U.S. Highway 61. Saturday night's accident occurred around 8:15 in the southbound lanes of the highway. It is not yet known how a vehicle came to be traveling the wrong way on the highway. The coroner confirmed four deaths. It has also been reported that two people suffered critical injuries.
