Head-on crash injures 5 near 31st, Grand

Kansas City police said officers attempted to stop a white Chevrolet SUV that was speeding and running red light at 40th Street and Southwest Trafficway. Investigators said the driver refused to stop, and turned east on 31st Street.

"The officers discontinued attempts to stop the vehicle and it was last seen eastbound at 31st and Broadway," according to a police report.

Accident investigators said that at Grand Avenue, the SUV crossed the center line and hit a westbound Dodge passenger car head on.

Authorities said a passenger in the car suffered critical injuries while the driver suffered serious injuries. Three people in the SUV had serious injuries, but they are expected to survive. The SUV driver was taken into custody on suspicion of driving while intoxicated.
