Police identify man killed in head-on crash following high-speed chase

According to the Platte County Sheriff’s office, shortly before 2 p.m. Burkholder, of Kansas City, Mo., stole a red pickup truck from a Platte County residence. He led authorities on a high-speed chase, which lasted for approximately 45 minutes.

Police have identified the man killed in a crash Wednesday after a high-speed chase as 35-year-old Justin Burkholder.

According to the Platte County Sheriff’s office, shortly before 2 p.m. Burkholder, of Kansas City, Mo., stole a red pickup truck from a Platte County residence. He led authorities on a high-speed chase, which lasted for approximately 45 minutes.

The chase began near the Kansas City International Airport, then went east to 152 Highway near Liberty and then back toward Platte County. The pursuit ended on I-29 near the Platte River, when Burkholder, who ended up crossing over into the southbound lanes of I-29 heading northbound, hit a Chevrolet Suburban head-on. Burkholder died at the scene. The driver of the tan Suburban was identified as Benjamin Shively, 38, of Overland Park, Kan. He was rushed to an area hospital with serious injuries.

Witnesses reported 20-to-30 police vehicles involved in the pursuit.

Authorities said Burkholder had a felony probation violation warrant out of Wyandotte County and three failure to appear warrants from North Kansas City.

The male driver of the tan Suburban was identified by police as Benjamin Shively from Overland Park. He was rushed to an area hospital with serious injuries.
