Rural Hickman man killed in hit and run crash

Deputies said he was hit by a car and pronounced dead at the scene. They said Nicklas was walking down a gravel road when the car accidentally struck him, throwing him into a ditch. The car took off moments later, deputies said they don't have any leads. If you have any information, call 911 immediately.

Gregg Nicklas spent most of his life helping others. As director of the Christian Heritage Homes, he strived to find children in the foster care system a loving home.

We spoke with him in 2006, a crew joined Nicklas in building homes for deserving families.

"Some of these people have two weeks of vacation during the year and they're giving their two weeks of vacation to come help us build these homes for children," he said.

Unfortunately, Nicklas' life of serving was cut short.

"We believe he went out to walk the dog near their driveway of their residence and his wife found him," Lancaster County Sheriff Terry Wagner said.

Deputies said he was hit by a car and pronounced dead at the scene. They said Nicklas was walking down a gravel road when the car accidentally struck him, throwing him into a ditch. The car took off moments later, deputies said they don't have any leads.

"Any help that the public might have of a vehicle that might've been in the area, if anybody's seen the vehicle that was acting suspicious or sustained any damage, fresh damage," Wagner said.
