Accident Date:Thursday, February 19, 2015
A staff member in the office of Hopatcong High School Principal Lewis Benfatti said that a much-loved male senior, known throughout the 600-student school, died in a car crash Thursday evening.
Grief counseling was made available to students Friday morning following notification of the senior's death to the student body, the school official said.
“The intersection of Route 46 and Old Wolfe Road has been the sight of several other injurious crashes and another fatal traffic accident in the not-too-distant past. It is an intersection we will continue to seek to make better through engineering with our partners at the New Jersey State Department of Transportation,” he said.
The investigation is ongoing, but drugs and alcohol do not seem to have played a role in the crash, and no charges have yet been filed, Anthony said.
A crash that occurred around 8:30 p.m. Thursday on Route 46 near Old Wolfe Road left a 17-year-old boy dead and a 17-year-old girl injured, both Hopatcong High School students. William Staszewski, 28, of Budd Lake, was driving a 2009 Mercury Mariner when he struck a 2002 Dodge Neon driven by Rebecca Falconer as she attempted to make a left turn from westbound Route 46 onto Old Wolfe Road. Staszewski was unable to avoid hitting the Dodge after Falconer turned in front of Staszewski's eastbound lane of travel and right of way. Gregory Pellinger was a front-seat passenger in the Dodge and suffered major injuries from the crash. He was transported to Hackettstown Medical Center, where he later died.
