Medina said no officers fired their weapons during the hourslong incident, and investigators are working to determine what caused the blaze. He said an autopsy will be done on Friday to determine how the boy died.

Independent investigation sought in death of 15-year-old

Police have said that Rosenau’s cause of death was smoke inhalation and said it’s possible that the fire could have been started by the tear gas canisters or powder-based chemicals they fired into the house during the standoff.

While Albuquerque Fire Rescue is still investigating how the blaze started, Medina said APD believes the “device used by tactical officers may have ignited the fire.”

More than an hour after a Bernalillo County deputy threw a pepper spray canister into a home during a standoff last month, the SWAT team saw it smoldering on a mattress.
