Sandoval County Sheriff’s Sgt. Robert Baron remained in critical condition and on life support after he was struck by a car on icy Interstate 25 while investigating a weather-related crash near San Felipe Pueblo.
Baron, 47, remained in the neurological intensive care unit at the University of New Mexico Hospital where law enforcement officers from several agencies awaited word of his condition, a Sandoval County said.
Baron was investigating a roll-over accident on northbound I-25 just north of the San Felipe exit when another car skidded off the road in icy conditions, Wiese said. Baron apparently struck his head on pavement and was transported by ambulance to UNMH.
Baron, who has been with the Sandoval County Sheriff’s Office about seven years, was promoted to sergeant and patrol supervisor last month. Baron had previously served as a detective for the agency.
