A Duke Center, Pa., man died in WCA Hospital in Jamestown after his boat capsized on Chautauqua Lake near Bemus Point a day earlier.

Robert W. Knell Sr., 69, of Duke Center, who died Saturday, was fishing on Friday afternoon with his friend when their 14-foot boat capsized because of weather conditions.

An officer with the Jamestown-based New York State Police said the boat that Knell and Roy Barclay, 65, of Derrick City, Pa., were in, capsized due to high winds and heavy rain.

State police said the men were rescued from the water by good samaritans, a father and son from Rochester, who were also on a fishing trip and saw and them on the water. The father and son got the men out and took them to an adjacent dock, at which point responders arrived.

Although he was rushed to the hospital after being rescued from the water, police say Knell died due to complications related to a lack of oxygen he experienced during the accident. On Sunday, state police said the water temperature in the lake was about 58 degrees at the time of the accident, while the air temperature was about 79 degrees. They were in the water for an unknown period of time before being discovered, police said.

Police said the boat began to take on water due to the waves, causing it to capsize. Both Knell and Barclay were wearing life jackets at the time of the accident. Severe weather conditions are considered the sole factor in the accident, according to police.

Knell transported by Bemus Point Ambulance, while Barclay was taken from the scene by Maple Springs Ambulance to WCA, where he was treated for exposure and released.
