Sixth victim dies following LIE crash in Manorville

Helen Adelson, 71, of Westhampton, succumbed to her injuries at Stony Brook University Hospital on Monday, officials say. Her husband was also among the deceased.

According to police, Carmelo Pinales, 26, of Hicksville, was driving eastbound on the LIE past exit 68 when he lost control of the vehicle around 9:30 a.m.

Police, who have said they believed Mr. Pinales was likely speeding, expanded on their scenario for the crash. They said that after Mr. Pinales’s car entered the roughly 50-foot-wide grassy median, it struck a small guard rail, then clipped the top of 3-foot high cable barrier running down the center of the median.

After hitting the cable barrier, no tire marks show Mr. Pinales’s car landed on the northern half of the median, suggesting that from that point the Subaru was airborne.

The Pinales family shared heartbreaking Snapchat video with CBS2. It was posted 15 minutes before the fatal crash. A carefree Patricia Pinales was seated next to her nephew Christopher – as they headed to a water park. Carmelo Pinales is seen behind the wheel.

6 killed in crash family says was caused by oil slick

A passenger in the BMW, Isidore Adelson, 81, of Westhampton, was taken to a hospital, where he succumbed to his injuries late Sunday. Adelson's wife, Helen, died Monday. Two others in the BMW were injured.

Relatives of the Pinales' family say they believe an earlier accident left an oil spill, which contributed to the crash.
