Off-duty FDNY firefighter dies in Long Island crash
Suffolk County police say that off-duty firefighter Timothy Melia, 30, was driving a 2004 Hyundai Santa Fe down East Bartlett Road in Middle Island around 4:30 p.m. Thursday when he apparently lost control while going around a curve. Melia, a nine-year FDNY veteran, struck a utility pole before vaulting off the roadway into a wooded area, where his car flipped on its side. He died at the scene.
