Off-duty FDNY firefighter dies in Long Island crash

He lived in Bay Shore, L.I., but was assigned to a Brooklyn firehouse, an FDNY spokesman said.

Suffolk County police say that off-duty firefighter Timothy Melia, 30, was driving a 2004 Hyundai Santa Fe down East Bartlett Road in Middle Island around 4:30 p.m. Thursday when he apparently lost control while going around a curve. Melia, a nine-year FDNY veteran, struck a utility pole before vaulting off the roadway into a wooded area, where his car flipped on its side.
