One person seriously injured, transported to hospital, after a box truck overturns on the Brooklyn-Queens Expressway on Staten Island.
Accident on BQE causing delays on Verrazano-Narrows Bridge to Brooklyn.
STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. -- An accident on the Brooklyn-Queens Expressway has caused traffic to back up on Wednesday morning onto the Verrazano-Narrows Bridge and the Staten Island Expressway heading eastbound.
The accident occurred at about 4:30 a.m., and though it has been cleared, traffic was still was backed up for miles at about 8 a.m. on the BQE.
Fire officials say one person was taken to a hospital in serious condition following the accident in the eastbound lanes of the BQE.
A box truck overturned near the Atlantic Avenue exit. Traffic is being diverted at Fort Hamilton Parkway.
The eastbound lanes and two westbound lanes of the BQE are shut down.
Westbound traffic is backed up about six miles to 65th Street in Bay Ridge. Westbound traffic at the scene of the accident and over the Brooklyn Bridge is moving slowing.
The cause of the accident wasn't immediately known.
