NCHP: Distracted driver causes fatal accident in Gaston County

One person was killed and one was hurt in an accident on Highway 321 just south of Hardin Road in Gaston County, late Monday afternoon. Officials say the driver of the pickup was looking off to the side of the road at crews cutting down trees when the accident happened. The driver of the pickup has been charged with failure to reduce speed, officials say. North Carolina Highway Patrol says a Nissan was traveling northbound at a slow speed and a pickup truck, traveling at a higher speed, crashed into the rear of the Nissan. One was pronounced dead on scene and the other was taken to the hospital with minor injuries.

Troopers with the North Carolina Highway Patrol said that 49-year-old Jill Ann Hamrick was driving a Nissan northbound with her mother when her vehicle has some type of mechanical problem. A pickup truck traveling at a higher speed crashed into the rear of the Nissan.
