Louis Howell, 25, was traveling west on N.C. Highway 42 shortly before 6:30 p.m., according to the N.C. Highway Patrol. The female driver of the Dodge was taken to the hospital with serious injuries. A Dodge Challenger traveling the opposite direction ran off the road, overcorrected and crashed head-on into Howell's pickup truck. There were two other women in the vehicle, but the nature of their injuries was not available.
