Highway Patrol Lt. Troy Hischer says evidence at the scene indicates the 62-year-old bus driver was braking when the crash happened Monday afternoon near Larimore, but that he didn't stop in time.

North Dakota Highway Patrol Lt. Troy Hischer said five boys ranging in age from 6 to 16 and four girls from 5 to 14 years old were hurt in the crash.

Now, passengers on board the bus have reportedly said that Cassidy tried unbuckling Danner after he slumped over in his seat. Danner’s family says he had a history of heart problems, Inforum reports.
A bus driver, 62, and a 17-year-old student were killed and 12 other people were injured after a train vs. school bus crash on a gravel road about 5 miles east of Larimore, North Dakota Monday, January 5. The bus failed to yield to railroad crossing and crashed with a freight train Monday afternoon about 100 miles north of Fargo. The bus was carrying students from the Larimore Public School District. The train was carrying no cargo, and the two BNSF crew members on the train were not injured in the crash. Check back for more information as it becomes available.
