It is not known at this time whether alcohol was a factor, or whether McNerney was wearing a seatbelt. The Ohio State Highway Patrol continues to investigate the crash.
One woman was killed after crashing her car into the back of disabled vehicle sitting on the side of the highway in Summit County on Saturday just before 11:30 p.m. on I-77 southbound. A 2011 Chevrolet Avalanche driven by 58-year-old Richard W. Fort Jr., of Maryland, was parked on the right shoulder. A second vehicle, a 2006 Buick Rendezvous driven by Denise McNerney, 54, of Mayfield Heights, was driving southbound on I-77. McNerney was driving on the shoulder of the roadway when she crashed into the rear of Fort's parked vehicle. Fort and his passenger, 59-year-old Katheryn Diane Burns-Fort, of Maryland, were both taken to Akron General Montrose with minor injuries. McNerney was taken to Akron General, where she died of her injuries.
