A 46-year-old man who died Wednesday in a Solon car crash has been identified as David G. Benning, Solon police said.

The Novelty man drove off a U.S. 422 embankment. His car smashed into trees and struck a drainage culvert, Solon police chief Paul Viland said.

Benning was pronounced dead at the scene. No other cars were involved in the crash.

It's unclear what caused the 46 year old to veer off the roadway, Viland said. The collision shut down U.S. 422 eastbound for more than an hour.

Solon police are investigating the cause of the crash in conjunction with the Southeast Area Law Enforcement Accident Investigation Unit and in collaboration with the Cuyahoga County Medical Examiner's Office.
