Oregon State Police released the names of two men killed in a multi-vehicle crash in Douglas County on Sunday.

The accident happened about 11 p.m. along the northbound shoulder of Interstate 5 about eight miles south of Canyonville, killing a roadside assistance mechanic and a passenger in a commercial truck.

Lt. Gregg Hastings, an OSP spokesman, said a disabled commercial truck pulling a semi-trailer was parked on the right northbound shoulder of I-5.

The mechanic, 54-year-old William M. Steinbrook of Yoncalla, was standing between the disabled truck and his roadside assistance vehicle, a 1999 Ford F350 truck. Just then an International truck pulling an "Auto Zone" semi-trailer driven by William Dean Penicks, 56, from Norco, Calif., was traveling north cresting a hill in the right lane.

The truck crossed the fog line and crashed into the back of the stopped semi-trailer, OSP said. The impact pushed the disabled truck and trailer forward, pinning Steinbrook between the truck and the roadside assistance vehicle.

Steinbrook was pronounced dead at the scene. A 43-year old male passenger in the International truck's sleeper bed, Adam W. Pennington from Hemet, Calif., was also pronounced dead at the scene.

Penicks was transported by Glendale Ambulance to Mercy Medical Center in Roseburg for non-life threatening injuries.

The driver of the disabled truck, who was outside the vehicle at the time, was not injured.
