Bruce Norman Ashton 68, killed when his pickup leaves the U.S. 101 roadway and crashes into several trees in Coos County.

Oregon State Police have identified the man who died in a vehicle accident along U.S. 101 Monday afternoon as Bruce Norman Ashton of Lakeside.

OSP responded to the accident about 1:15 .m. Monday. When officers arrived at the scene, the found that Ashton, 68, had been driving along the highway in a 2005 Chevrolet Avalanche near Kendall Estates Lane when the truck went off the pavement and hit several trees.

First responders found that Ashton was dead at the scene, even though he was using his seatbelt and the Avalanche’s airbags had deployed.

OSP is continuing the investigation. Assisting at the scene the Coos County Sheriff's Office, Lakeside Rural Fire Protection District and ODOT.

Both lanes of U.S. 101 were closed for over three hours with a detour in place.
