Police slapped down spike strips then chased a suspected drunken driver to a backyard, where an officer tackled the 23-year-old, who was arrested Friday on multiple charges. It all started about 8:40 p.m., with a call to emergency dispatchers about about a drunken driver in a Ford Focus on U.S. 30 near Scappoose. Oregon State Police overtook the car on Old Portland Road, trying to get the man, later identified as Steven Michael Thompson of St. Helens, to stop. But Thompson fled. St. Helens police laid down spike strips near 14th Street on Old Portland Road, puncturing three of the car's tires. The car crashed on Ninth Street and Columbia Boulevard. Thompson got out and ran. A St. Helens police officer ended up tackling him in the back yard of a home. Thompson, who resisted arrest, was restrained before 9 p.m. He was hauled off to Columbia County jail on the following charges: DUII Felony attempt to elude in a vehicle Misdemeanor attempt to elude on foot Reckless driving Resisting arrest Criminal trespass in the second degree Criminal mischief in the third degree
