A fiery 11-car pileup shut down U.S. 26 near Seaside for several hours Tuesday, but rather than run away from the danger, several witnesses jumped into action to save the victims.

Twelve vehicles crashed on Highway 26 after cars slid on an icy bridge, shutting down lanes in both directions at milepost 24 for about 4 hours Tuesday, according to Oregon State Police.

Two cars caught fire in the crash Tuesday morning near the Quartz Creek Rest Area in the Oregon Coast Range, police said.
Police said a tanker truck was involved and HazMat units were called to help clean up spilled fuel.
Three people were taken to Portland area hospitals. One of the drivers had serious injuries.
The Oregon Department of Transportation warned drivers to avoid the area. Detours were temporarily set up on Highway 47 and Highway 201.
