Emuel James Smothers, 48, dies in single vehicle crash on Interstate 5 near Wilsonville on July 25.

A 48-year-old Dallas, Oregon man died in a fiery crash on Interstate 5 south of Wilsonville Friday.

Lt. Gregg Hastings, an Oregon State Police spokesman, said a northbound 1993 Buick Regal went off the road near Milepost 281, about three miles south of Wilsonville, around 11:55 a.m.

He said the car went through the shoulder, through grass for about 200 feet and crashed into a tree. The car then burst into flames.

The driver, identified as Emuel James Smothers, died at the scene. Hastings said the crash remains under investigation.

Hastings urged witnesses to the crash to call Oregon State Police at 800-452-7888.
