Frances Elaine Smith, 45, killed, 4 people injured after a police cruiser and a pickup collide on Clemson Boulevard in Anderson, South Carolina

The Anderson County Sheriff's Office says one of its deputies has been involved in a wreck. They say a deputy was driving a patrol car and had a reserve officer with him when the vehicle collided with a pickup truck just before midnight Saturday morning on Clemson Boulevard in front of Tucker's Restaurant. According to investigators the pickup was traveling in the opposite direction as the patrol car. The sheriff's office says the deputy and reserve officer, as well as the three people in the truck were taken to Anderson Medical Center. Public Information Officer Sheila Cole says they expect the deputy to be all right. The Anderson County Coroner says one of the passengers in the truck, Frances Elaine Smith, 45, of Seneca, died at the hospital. Highway Patrol says she was not wearing her seat belt and died from head and abdominal trauma. The condition of the other victims is unknown at this point, but Cole said the deputy is expected to be released from the hospital soon. The sheriff's office says the crash occurred as the deputy and reserve officer were responding to a call about a man barricading himself in a hotel room. While responding to the emergency, Shore said the deputy vehicle lost control and crossed the center line before crashing into the pickup. Shore said the road conditions at the time were wet but it is not clear whether it was raining at the time. Cole said the deputy and reserve officer were responding as back-up reinforcements and other officers already at the scene resolved that issue. Cole said the reserve officer is a certified officer who works for the sheriff's office on a voluntary basis. Shore says the people in the truck were on their way to Denny's when the vehicles collided. The South Carolina Highway Patrol is investigating the crash.
