4 passengers hurt in Amtrak train derailment in South Carolina

An Amtrak train expected to make stops in Gastonia, Charlotte and Salisbury came to a halt after derailing six miles south of Spartanburg, South Carolina early Monday morning.
A spokesman for Amtrak says seven of the nine cars of the Amtrak Crescent came off the tracks around midnight. The Spartanburg County Fire Marshal says four of the 207 passengers suffered minor injuries. None of the 11 crew members were hurt. The Amtrak Crescent was traveling north from New Orleans. The train was expected to make its final stop in New York City later Monday. Amtrak is investigating why the train derailed. The company says it organized bus transportation for its travelers. Crews were able to re-establish power and lighting to the cars a short time after the derailment, allowing people to stay warm while they waited for their bus.
