A former Knoxville police officer has died in a crash on an Interstate 40 exit ramp. WVLT-TV in Knoxville reported (http://bit.ly/1nbOPDh ) that 52-year-old David Gaston, Sr., of Powell was driving his car down the West Hills Road exit ramp Thursday night when it collided with a van driven by a 17-year-old woman. Police say Gaston's car hit a steel utility pole and the van went into a spin. Gaston was partially ejected and pronounced dead at the scene.
The teen driver of the van was taken to U.T. Medical Center with non-life threatening injuries. Gaston, who retired in October 2012 after serving 26 years with the Knoxville police department, wasn't wearing a seatbelt.
