17-year-old female killed, one other student injured, taken to hospital, after their car goes out of control and strikes a power pole in South Memphis.

Three Mitchell High School students were involved in a car accident Thursday morning. Shelby County Schools confirms one of those students has died.

The accident happened at 10:52 a.m. near the intersection of Weaver Road and Levi Road in South Memphis.

The driver of the 2000 Chevy Cavalier was taken to The MED in non-critical condition. The front seat passenger, later identified as Laquisha Lipsey, 17, was pronounced dead on the scene. A passenger in the back seat was not injured.

According to police, it appears as though the car slid, then hit a power pole.

According to students at the school, the three students left for lunch and never came back.

As the day went on, news of the crash spread through the hallways; students learned one of their classmates did not make it.

"I knew her, I was just playing with her in the band room before she got killed," Kerron Davis said about the student who died.

"They always go up the street to get some pizza," said Johnathon Harris. "They went up there to get some pizza and they never came back."

He continued, "We was like, really, really sad, because she was turning her life around. She made the honor roll for the first time, she was so happy."

Harris says the girl who died was well known at Mitchell High School, making it hard on everyone.

"Everybody was sad," he said. "The teachers were crying. It's like if they had to pick one student at the school to say who made the most improvement, they would have picked her."

Action News 5 will not release the name of the victim until police make the official announcement. They will first notify her family.

UPDATE: Jashunda Reed, 18, the driver of the vehicle has been arrested and charged in connection with this accident. 02/28/14
