Community remembers Dickson County student killed in collision

Dickson police identified the truck driver as Daniel Maupin, of Pikeville, TN. Officers said they charged Maupin with failure to yield right of way.

A community is mourning the loss of a local baseball player and popular student.

Andrew Morton, 16, of Dickson, died in a crash Thursday off Highway 46.

Morton was hauling a lawnmower for his mowing business when he crashed with a semi-truck turning into the Pilot gas station, according to Dickson police.

Morton's mother, Becky Bear, said her son strived to make the world a better place for his friends and four younger siblings.

"I know you all hear this all the time, but he'd give you the shirt off his back," she said.

Upon returning from the funeral home, Bear discovered a surprise. Someone had cut her grass.

Relatives and teammates flocked to Bear's house Friday to remember the boy who spent his days behind home plate as catcher. His jerseys hung in the doorway.

"He was one of the angels that walked this earth and I'm blessed to call him my son," Bear said.

She said recently Morton had been trying to eradicate bullying in his school.

Friends remembered him as a jokester and wherever he went, laughter followed.

"He always wanted to make people happy," said Kevin Spry, a friend who has known Morton since middle school.

Dickson police identified the truck driver as Daniel Maupin, of Pikeville, TN. Officers said they charged Maupin with failure to yield right of way.

The investigation is ongoing.
