Two men were killed in a car crash that shut down a highway in east Fort Worth for hours Friday afternoon.

Two men were killed in a car crash that shut down a highway in east Fort Worth for hours Friday afternoon.

Just before 2 p.m., Melissa Shearin heard the familiar sound of screeching tires and the crush of metal coming from the southbound lanes of East Loop 820 near Ramey Avenue.

She lives in the neighborhood along the access road and immediately heard the crash. She said wrecks are becoming more common in the area.

"As I was calling 911, I was running," Shearin said.

Police said a car crossed the grassy median and smashed into a truck. The pickup kept going southbound, but the car spun head-on into another truck.

Shearin said a fearlessness that comes from 15 years of working in a hospital kicked in, and she ran toward the crash to help.

"If it was my child," she said, fighting back tears, "I would want somebody to be there holding my child's hand in their last moments here."

She found two young men pinned in the car underneath the truck. One was dead, the other still breathing. She prayed with him until he drew his last breath.

"[We prayed] for God to touch his heart. My first instinct was to ask for healing," she said. "It was really devastating."

Shearin said it was also too close for comfort.

"I do know that I pray a lot. Especially when I hear cars coming," Shearin said. "It feels like they are coming in my house sometimes, and today it was really bad."

Four people in the second truck that was hit were not seriously hurt.

Police said they don't believe drugs or alcohol were involved.

The Tarrant County Medical Examiner's office identified one of the victims as 20-year-old Tajh Long of Arlington. The other name has not been released.
